MICAIA participates in the launch of BIOFUND
Maputo, June 10-12, 2015
MICAIA participated in an international forum entitled “Conservation as a Pillar of Development”.
The forum was organized by BIOFUND, Mozambique’s Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity, a conservation trust fund supporting Mozambique’s protected area network. The forum analysed how conservation in general and a protected areas network in particular can and must contribute to national development, increasing human well-being, livelihoods, and provision of ecosystem goods and services essential for robust and sustainable socio-economic development. The occasion was also used to formally launch BIOFUND.
In addition to the forum, the event also showcased innovative art, photographs, video, maps, information, and interactive displays on the unique biodiversity of Mozambique. Several organizations and private companies involved with biodiversity conservation had stands to introduce their work.
MICAIA’s stand showcased the work of the MICAIA Foundation and Eco MICAIA Ltd, as well as that of the three inclusive businesses we have helped establish – Ndzou Camp Ltd, Mozambique Honey Company Ltd and Baobab Products Mozambique Ltd. The MICAIA team (Leopoldina Farias, Andrew Kingman and Milagre Nuvunga) interacted with visitors and the media, and there was considerable interest in both the products on display and MICAIA’s model and approach. The stand attracted many visitors including school children (especially when honey samples were offered!) as well as high level government officials including Hon. Minister Jorge Ferrão (Minister of Education), shown in the photograph below talking with Milagre.
